Land trust seeks volunteers for water quality monitoring program
Volunteers are needed for Boothbay Region Land Trust's (BRLT) brand new water quality monitoring program. Clean coastal waters are essential for the quality of life in the Boothbay region, and this monitoring program will allow the BRLT to gather information that can be used to help understand the quality of the waters that surround local towns.
The 2015 water quality monitoring will take place on Mondays every other week from May through October at sites along the shore. It will be held in the mornings and will last for 1 to 2 hours. No prior experience is needed. A volunteer training event will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4, at Bigelow Laboratory.
Sampling sites are located in Boothbay, Barters Island, Southport, Boothbay Harbor and East Boothbay. Each volunteer will be in charge of monitoring one or two sites, where they would collect information about a variety of characteristics.
The characteristics that will be tested include salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature and water clarity. BRLT's collaboration with Bigelow Laboratory will also engage the volunteers in collecting information about some of the marine organisms that live along the coast.
To learn more, or sign up to volunteer, contact BRLT Executive Director Nick Ullo at nullo@bbrlt.org or 207-633-4818.
