East Boothbay man recovering in hospital following car accident
A medical condition caused an 80-year-old East Boothbay man to lose control of his vehicle on March 10 and hit a house. Norman Lind was traveling south into the East Boothbay Village when he lost control of his 2008 Subaru Outback.
Lind began “to feel dizzy and blacked out” while driving along Route 96, according to Lincoln County reserve patrol officer Scott Mercier. Around 9:40 a.m., Lind crossed the center line and hopped over the sidewalk. The Subaru climbed a snowbank and landed a few feet in front of a house before hitting it. The home is located at 254 Ocean Point Road and owned by John Hauptfleisch.
The Boothbay Region Ambulance Service transported Lind to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. He is being treated for a non-life threatening condition, according Mercier.
According to the accident report, the car caused minor interior and exterior property damage to the house. The Subaru received damages over the reportable threshold.
“The snow actually slowed the car down enough so it didn’t hit the house very hard,” Mercier said. “It appears the driver’s injuries weren’t caused by the accident.”
The accident report indicated weather and road conditions did not contribute to the accident.
Lind was the only person in the vehicle. There were no other injured parties.
Lind’s wife, Mary, said on March 12 that her husband would be spending a few days recovering in the hospital. The couple was appreciative of the quality service Norman Lind received following the accident.
“He’s fine,” she said. “Everybody who responded to the accident was so good and helpful. And we’re both very thankful for that.”
The sheriff’s department was assisted by the Boothbay Fire Department, Boothbay Harbor Police Department and the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service.
