County composting committee meets March 12 in Wiscasset
The Lincoln County Composting Committee is holding its first meeting of 2015 on March 12 at 4 p.m. at the Morris Farm on Gardiner Road in Wiscasset. All interested individuals and groups are welcome to attend.
This meeting is being hosted by the Morris Farm in conjunction with Maine Department of Environmental Protection and Lincoln County Recycling. Mark King of the Sustainability Unit of the DEP will be the main presenter and will talk about the composting process at both the backyard and municipal levels.
Traditionally, municipal composting has focused on grass clippings and leaves, but King will talk about incorporating food scraps into the composting process. Food scraps constitute over 22 percent of household waste and keeping them out of the waste stream and converting them to more enriched compost are worthy goals.
King is an energetic and inspiring speaker and has provided invaluable training and technical support to composting efforts in Lincoln County.
