Hedgcock family doing fine after barn fire
A strong showing of community support has helped an East Boothbay couple recover from a barn fire August 4.
The community has rallied to provide Seth and Ann Hedgcock of 14 Fish Hawk Hill Road with financial and emotional support since the fire destroyed a barn and three vehicles.
Six fire departments battled the blaze, which started shortly after 9 a.m. in the couple’s barn. Seth Hedgcock was using a hot work lamp in trying to find a gas leak on his 1980 Mercedes Benz 450 SL. A drop of gas hit the lamp and flames ignited.
Hedgcock sustained second degree burns to his right arm. He was treated both at the scene and later at a local hospital. On Monday, Ann Hedgcock reported that the couple was still “dealing with the shock” of the sudden tragic event.
“We are doing fine, but it still going to take some time to heal,” said Ann Hedgcock. “Everybody has been so absolutely wonderful. The Rotary passed the hat. And our friends have constantly been around with food. It’s been such a shock, but the community support has just been incredible.”
Firefighters battled the blaze from about 9:30 a.m.until 3 p.m., according to Boothbay Fire Chief Richard Spofford. Firefighters hit the blaze with heavy hoses for 90 minutes before bringing the blaze under control.
The barn was a total loss. The Hedgcocks lost two other vehicles in the blaze. A 1961 Mercedes Benz 190 SL was also inside the barn. Seth Hedgcock said he’d had that vehicle in Boothbay for the past 46 years. The third vehicle lost in the fire was a 1992 Ford F-150. It was parked outside adjacent to the barn.
