Southport beach: Waiting for spring thaw

Kitten Island, off the beach at Hendricks Head on Southport, is not looking all that inviting right now. But give it a few months. With warmer weather, kids will be playing on it and jumping off it.
The land across from the beach is covered with snow, and work that was started last summer is on hold. Plans to build a new parking lot to accommodate approximately 24 cars will continue in the spring. According to Matt Cole, the existing parking lot only held around 16. Cole is on the beach committee and was appointed by Southport’s selectmen.
Southport Selectman Gerry Gamage said that traffic has been a problem in the past and the hope is to alleviate that. “People were parking illegally and it got out of control. We're hoping to make some additional parking and put up signage to enforce parking rules,” he said.
The house across the street, which sits on the land now owned by the town, along with some of the acreage, will be put up for sale. The town will retain around three quarters of an acre.
According to Southport Selectman Mary Lou Koskela, the existing driveway to the house will be replaced. “A new driveway is being cut through the woods, from the Salt Pond Road to the back of the house, to make for a private entrance,” she said.
