Friends of the Library group donates $30,000 to library

The Friends of the Library thank their volunteers, donors, and patrons for making possible a $30,000 donation to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library again this year. Considering that most of the books sold at the used book store are priced under $5, with the majority being .50 to $1, this represents a lot of books donated and sold. The uncounted volunteer man hours needed to sort, shelve and sell these books is impressive.
The used book store run by Friends of the Library had its start in 1961 with a handful of people raising enough money through bake sales to buy a book or two for the library. Now housed in the historic Hyde House next to the library, Friends has developed through the years to a crew of almost 50 volunteers working year-round to raise a substantial amount of money to donate to the library.
Volunteers are always welcomed into this organization. Our desk staffers work easy two-hour shifts and get to meet interesting people from all over the world. Other volunteers shelve the books in the various categories, sort through the donated books, and take discards to the dump. Our famous “porch” is open 24/7 from April through October and offers books of all sorts for a small donation. If you love books and are interested in joining this fun effort please contact Jean Dube (207-633-6539).
