Teen rescued in Edgecomb woods
Rescuers from Wiscasset, Edgecomb, and Newcastle worked together to get a cold, injured teen out of the woods in Edgecomb the night of December 16. Boothbay firefighters helped as well, setting up a landing zone for a LifeFlight helicopter at the Edgecomb Fire Station, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said.
The Deck House School student had fallen from a rock near the school, Potter said; the 8 to 10-foot fall injured the boy's back and his right wrist.
The Edgecomb Fire Department responded to the scene, along with Wiscasset Emergency Medical Service and the Wiscasset and Newcastle fire departments, Potter said.
Rescuers took turns carrying the cold but conscious teen on a stretcher out of the woods. The quarter-mile to half-mile trek to the boy and back out with him was difficult, with logs and snow on the ground, Potter said.
“I can't thank Wiscasset, Newcastle and Boothbay enough for coming,” he said.
The boy traveled in the helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment of the non-life-threatening injuries, Potter said.
