Skidompha book shop will stay open through Christmas Eve, close for January
The Skidompha Secondhand Book Shop will stay open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, then will close for its regular winter break until February 1.
“The shop has had a great year, thanks to our many loyal customers and our enthusiastic volunteers,” said Rosie Bensen, co-manager of the shop. “Thank you all!”
She also said, “We’re always looking for donations of used books in good condition, especially unusual or rare books, art books, and books about Maine and New England or by Maine and New England authors.”
Donations maybe be left at the shop whenever it’s open. During the winter break, donors may leave books if a volunteer is working there (the lights will be on). Otherwise, phone the library at 207-563-5513 and leave a message for shop managers Gary and Rosie Bensen. The Bensens request that books not be left outside the shop; if books get wet they must be discarded. The shop doesn’t accept magazines, old textbooks or encyclopedias.
The book shop, a major fundraiser for Skidompha Public Library, is run entirely by volunteers. All items are donated, and all proceeds support the library. Besides books, the shop offers audiobooks, music CDs, movies on DVD and tape and puzzles. The shop is located in the Red Barn on Elm Street, just up the hill from the library’s back door. It’s open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shop volunteers also maintain a small collection in a bookcase in the library, where books may be purchased.
For more information about the book shop, visit its pages on the library’s website, www.skidompha.org, or phone the shop at 207-563-7807 during operating hours.
