Rotary raises $5,000 for Philippines relief
The Rotary Club "passed the hat" and raised a total of $5,000, which is on its way to the Philippines to aid in typhoon relief.
The money has been sent directly to ShelterBox, an ongoing Rotary project that has been assisting in disaster relief for almost a decade. Each ShelterBox costs $1,000, and contains a tent, water purification system, cook stove and pots, mosquito nets and more; everything needed by a family whose home has been destroyed.
Our local Rotary Club is well connected to Rotarians in the Philippines since Marty Helman led a Rotary exchange there in 2008. The club's donations were spurred by a financial challenge from Rotary member Mike and his wife Penny Pollard of Southport (shown here with club president Jen Osman), and club members responded generously.
Any other individual who wishes to support purchase of a ShelterBox is invited to write a check for any amount made out to the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club Foundation and mail it to P.O. Box 518, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.
