Where is the Boothbay sign?
Anybody traveling south on Route 27 might have noticed an unwelcoming blank space between stone pillars.
The “Welcome to Boothbay” sign at the northern town line has been undergoing a facelift for the past several weeks.
The Boothbay Civic Association, a grassroots organization that raises money for town projects, noticed the sign was getting a bit shabby and hired local sign maker Jon Marsh to refurbish it.
“We were going to have it done earlier in the summer, but we found out it was going to take a while," said BCA treasurer Estelle Appel. "It's kind of like the stern of a boat that needs multiple coats of varnish.”
Marsh took down the sign three weeks ago, stripped the finish and applied fresh coats of varnish with gold leaf accents.
Over the years, the sign has endured severe weather and vandalism, and was in need of some touching up, Marsh said.
The sign is slated to be back up as soon as possible and is being paid for entirely by the BCA.
