While reviewing municipal appointment vacancies, Edgecomb selectmen were reminded Nov. 15 that several filled seats still needed those people to take their oaths of office. Selectmen reported both planning board alternates were in place. Selectmen still needed to appointment alternates to the ordinance review committee. 

Town Clerk Claudia Coffin reported the two recently appointed planning board alternates and Schmid Committee members David Nutt and Rick Nelson still hadn’t been sworn in and she hadn’t received paperwork for other appointees.. One appointee is Curt Crosby. He was recently reappointed as a Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District trustee for another three-year term.

Selectmen promised to remind all to fulfill their requirements to perform their municipal duties which includes being sworn in. A couple unfilled appointments are harbor master and an alternate. Selectmen planned on discussing possible appointments with the Harbor Committee, but the the meeting was postponed.

In other action, the board is planning a Nov. 29 meeting with the budget committee. So far, four of the five members indicated they’d like to continue serving on the committee. Returning members include Chairman Jack Brennan and Janet Blevins, Karen Potter and Joe McSwain. Selectman Mike Smith is seeking a response from Fran McCue about continuing her committee work.

Selectmen scheduled Dec. 3 for holding the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. The event is open to Edgecomb Eddy School students, residents, businesses and civic organizations. Selectmen plan on asking four people to judge this year’s contest. Selectmen will ask local postmaster Bruce Harford, local artist Ramone Warren and Boothbay Register reporter Bill Pearson to continue as judges. Selectmen will also ask Alternate Organizational Structure 98 Superintendent Bob Kahler to serve as a guest judge. 

Smith will provide the trees. The contest will conclude with a 5 p.m. tree illumination. There will be no community caroling due to COVID-19 concerns, but selectmen are considering serving hot chocolate at the school following the event.

Another holiday event was also added to the municipal calendar. Selectmen will hold a community “Meet and Greet” from 8 to 10 a.m. on Dec. 11. Selectman Dawn Murray proposed the event at the town hall so new residents could meet other community members. Murray moved to Edgecomb four years ago. She has served both on the school committee and select board. Murray supported an informal event where people can become more familiar with one another and discuss local issues. 

“There are still a lot of people I don’t know. Most I know are still from either the school or as a selectman,” she said. “I think this is a good chance to meet each other and get to know more people.” Murray promised to serve coffee and Selectman Ted Hugger will serve muffins.

Selectmen ended the meeting with an executive session to discuss a legal matter. No action was taken following the session. Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29.
