Area church, inns help Lewiston fire victims
Working in between the raindrops on May 23, Ted Repa and York Fischer spent three hours loading a 24-foot U-Haul truck with donated household items and brought them to a warehouse in Lewiston.
The warehouse was set up by Catholic Charities of Maine to collect items for the approximately 200 people displaced by the recent fires in Lewiston which destroyed four apartment buildings.
After what Repa called a “simply heart-moving appeal” by Holly Stover, Department of Health and Human Services acting director for multicultural affairs, at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor on Mother's Day, May 12, parishioners started gathering items for the victims.
After the church paid for the rental of a U-Haul truck, the Newagen Seaside Inn and Rocktide Inn were contacted and gratefully donated beds, chairs, lamps, dishes and more for the fire victims.
“Jason (Schlosser of Newagen Seaside Inn) and Phil (Koskela of Rocktide Inn) really came through for us,” said Stover. “We appreciate their generosity.”
