Southport reopening for summer
With summer fast approaching, all bridges leading to Southport are open for the season.
In the offseason, it was the bridges that saw the most attention on the Island, with one undergoing extensive repairs and another with repairs on deck.
But, that it wasn't just bridges that saw changes over the winter.
Oliver's at Cozy Harbor was given the green light by voters to not only stay open later, but to allow the sale of beer and wine.
During Southport's town meeting, residents voted to allow the restaurant, which was opened in 2012, to close at 9 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. and to serve beer and wine.
Water comes from a different source. In November, voters in three towns (Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Southport) approved a merger that allowed the Boothbay Region Water District to assume control of the island's water source.
With control granted to the Water District, the last act of the Southport Water District was to begin installing a water main stretching across Cross Road.
With paving starting Tuesday, May 28, the last phase of the project neared its completion.
Other construction included the Southport Bridge getting a nip and a tuck from the Maine State Department of Transportation. The Maine DOT replaced some of the twisted grates on the bridge and smoothed out some of the bumps.
After the bridge, Robinson's Wharf recently upgraded the parking lot out front.
Soon, another bridge will see some needed repairs. The Pratts Island bridge, which was slated to be replaced with funds raised by the town, will instead get a full makeover from Paul Coulombe, who donated money to revamp the bridge.
The $200,000 that was earmarked by the town for that project was returned to Southport residents.
