Not a Showcase winner, but Cama Hagerthy still had fun
In case you missed “The Price Is Right,” on May 6, Cama Hagerthy of Boothbay didn't win the Showcase – but she did win a few nice prizes, has lots of good memories, and got a kiss from host Drew Carey.
“It was a great time,” said Hagerthy on May 7. “It would have been nice to win the Showcase but it wasn't to be. Peggy, the winner, was very nice.”
After getting on stage as the first contestant (winning a pair of Linus bicycles) and giving Drew Carey a hug, Cama went on to play the Clock game. She guessed the price of the two prizes – a computer and a gas grill – in 21 seconds (She had 30 seconds to guess the prices).
And as the bonus prize for winning the game, she won a trip to Newport Beach, Calif., and a four-night stay in the Hyatt Regency hotel there. After winning the prizes, she hugged Drew Carey, who gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“You don't actually win the prizes,” Hagerthy said. “The sponsoring companies provide you with the monetary value of the prize.”
Showing enthusiasm throughout the show, when Hagerthy fell after spinning the Big Wheel, she popped right up on her knees and raised her arms up high. She won the Big Wheel round by spinning a 60 (the wheel has slots from 5 to 100 in increments of 5). The first contestant went over 100 in her two spins and the second contestant only got 45 in two spins.
“The audience was yelling for me to stay with the first spin of 60, so I went with the odds and stayed with one spin,” Hagerthy said.
Watching the show
Hagerthy and a few friends watched the show in her sister's shop, Pamela's World, in Bath on Monday.
“A friend of mine who owns the Dairy Frost in Brunswick put a sign up on the business's door saying it would reopen at 12:30 p.m. so she could watch the show,” Hagerthy said.
Hagerthy said her childhood friend, Brenda, whom she went to the show with, went into work late so she could watch it.
The Showcase Showdown
Hagerthy said she and Peggy had a nice conversation before the Showdown, talking mostly about names, “since my name (Cama) is not a usual name,” Hagerthy said. “Her name was Peggy – not a nickname for Margaret.”
Peggy had first try at the first Showcase, a boat, a trip to France and a hot tub, but she passed it on to Hagerthy. Hagerthy guessed the price of $19,998.
“In hindsight, I should have gone with my first thought of $23,998,” said Cama, “and I would've won.” Hagerthy's Showcase was worth $25,274; had she gone with her first thought, the difference would have been only $1,276.
Peggy's Showcase of a trip to Chicago, a trip to Sweden and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, was worth $21,297 and she guessed a price of $19,500. Thus, she won the Showcase.
“Everyone was so nice there,” Hagerthy said. “It was a great time.”
