Rebuilding Together volunteers launch fall projects
Over two dozen Rebuilding Together of Lincoln County volunteers took to the road Saturday with hammers to take on seven reconstruction projects on the Boothbay peninsula. President Vic Taylor said the secret to a successful day is picking house captains with expertise and matching them with helpers who have compatible skills.
“We have the material, we need the skills,” said Taylor.
He said the program has moved to fall with hopes to find volunteer contractors less busy than in the spring. Captain Rich Green gathered a crew at his house. He had found a bargain on aluminum handicapped ramps. His crew was set to assemble, transport and mount three at homes around town.
Summer Resident Ed Horton said he has volunteered with Eight Days of Hope when at his winter home in Virginia. “I do the same kind of work in Virginia.”
At another site, volunteers scraped peeling paint on the house of an 84-year-old woman. On the other side of town, Foster Stroup and Doug Roberts dug post holes and installed a guard rail for an elderly lady. “Her son said it was dangerous for her to walk down the path,” said Roberts.
By mid-afternoon, Taylor reported that the only surprise was rot in a sill when a crew removed a collapsing deck.
“People have been able to stay in their homes for the work you have done,” minister Sarah Foulger said in a prayer before sending the crews on the road.
