Timber harvest receives approval pending DEP OK

The Boothbay Planning Board approved applications for a timber harvest, a home renovation and new construction Sept. 18. The first application was for Loretta Espey who requested approval for a timber harvest. Espey has her Pension Ridge Road property in Maine’s Tree Growth Program. She is required to manage her lot which includes a harvest once every 10 years. Her property is in the town’s shoreland zone so a harvest requires planning board approval.
Espey also needs Maine Department of Environmental Protection approval because her proposed harvest exceeds 40% of the tree lot. Forester David Schaible of Nobleboro represented Espey during the board meeting. Schaible explained a Wooly Adelgid infestation had killed a large number of hemlocks. The board gave its unanimous approval pending DEP permission.
Win and Lori Mitchell also received unanimous approval to build a home totaling less than 3,000 square feet on their North Shore Road property. The location is zoned as general residential and resource protection.
The board also unanimously approved Bill and Lisa Cloutier’s application to extensively renovate their non-conforming seasonal home. Their property is on Barters Island and lies within the shoreland zone. The Cloutiers reside in West Newbury, Massachusetts.
In other action, the board was scheduled to discuss requiring blasting information on building permits. Resident Carolyn Schwartz met with Code Enforcement Officer Jason Lorrain earlier this month. She told him her concerns about blasting earlier this year on an adjacent property. However, Schwartz didn’t attend the meeting. Lorrain doesn’t know if she plans on attending a future one.
The board meets next at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 in the municipal conference room.
