Southport town meeting March 4
Southport will hold its annual town meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 at the Southport Town Hall. Starting at 10:30 a.m., voters will face two articles on a secret ballot containing five election items: a moderator for the evening’s town meeting, as well as three-year terms for one selectman, a town clerk, one Boothbay Region Water District trustee, and one School Committee member. Voting will conclude at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting will feature Articles 3 through 56 which will take a public vote and consist of eight more seats up for grabs: two members each to the Board of Library Trustees and Board of Cemetery Trustees, three members to the Budget Committee, and one associate member to the Budget Committee. All seats are for three years.
Up for discussion and vote concerning education will be a regular instruction budget of $601,569.08; special education, $184,072.05; other instruction, $9,500; student and staff support, $16,489.54; system administration, $34,410.79; school administration, $69,149.30; transportation, $38,475.44; plant operation and maintenance, $84,496.76; and school lunch, $25,100. In all, the School Committee is asking for $984,408.62 in additional local funds for a budget of $1,063,262.96.
Article 20 will ask voters how much from the school fund balance should be appropriated toward replacement of the school building’s heating system. The budget committee has made no recommendation to date.
The proposed town administrative budget is $150,300 alongside a town hall operation and maintenance budget of $10,650 and a recommendation to bring water to the structure and funding the project for $25,000. Proposed budgets for code enforcement and planning/appeals boards are $34,500 and $1,400 respectively, both carrying over funds from 2018 in amounts of $28,655.83 and $525.
Article 27 will move the Southport Yacht Club from a residential zone to the Maritime Activities District.
