Where’s Waldo?
If you remember the series of books by the above title you will appreciate the aim of Boothbay Region Garden Club’s garden therapy project for July at St. Andrews Village. Sometimes upon entering the Gregory Wing, a visitor must search for a room number or a label that will identify the current occupant. Last week a group of volunteers came up with a scheme to make quick work of that search for relatives, friends or neighbors visiting loved ones. Just as Waldo could always be spotted in a crowd by his trademark red and white striped sweater and glasses, residents were encouraged to come up with their own “trademark” by creating uniquely individual paper flower groupings imprinted with either their name or their initials. We all know that brightly colored flowers always catch the eye out in the garden so participants were given various designs, shapes and sizes of paper blossoms that could be combined to form bright flower clusters that would be easily recognized along the hallway. Some participants chose just one flower and initial and others combined several to spell out their names. The residents and volunteers crafted extras for those who were not in attendance so no one would be left out. Look for these one-of-a-kind door markers the next time you visit. Hopefully they will catch your eye!
Last month’s project of filling the containers on the new vertical planters with herbs, strawberries, beans and climbing peas are doing beautifully. The planters can be found out in the courtyard and soon will be supplying the residents with their own home grown produce.
Garden Therapy, a community outreach program sponsored by the Boothbay Region Garden Club, is seeking a few good volunteers to continue this life affirming activity at the Gregory Wing.
