What’s it worth?
On Thursday, July 18, between 12:30 and 3 p.m., you may just be able to find out what an item is worth! Richard Plunkett, certified antiques appraiser, antique shop owner, painter and poet will be on hand at Hendricks Hill Museum, Southport, to answer your questions during his “Yellow Brick Roadshow.”
Plunkett has lived in Maine, an antique seekers haven, for about 30 years, but his love for things old and all but forgotten dates back to when he was a child and would rescue items of interest from certain oblivion, gathering them, at first in his little red wagon, and now in his large van. He searches out treasures wherever they hide and gives them an opportunity for new life in his Alna shop, Wizard of Odds and Ends, an antique shopper’s paradise.
Along the way in his career, first as an elementary school teacher, Plunkett accumulated enough knowledge and experience to become certified in appraisal work and he continues to offer his services for personal and estate appraisals. He is a member of several organizations dedicated to preservation including the New England Appraisers Association, the Victorian Society in America, Greater Portland Landmarks and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Over time, Plunkett has restored eight historic buildings, including the 1850s Greek Revival in which he lives and the 1880’s Head Tide General Store and Feed Barn that houses the Wizard of Odds shop. His energy knows no bounds! When he is not lecturing, teaching an art class, or welcoming people to his antiques shop, Plunkett finds time to donate his expertise one day a week at the St Andrews Thrift Store ensuring that items of value are priced accordingly.
So, if you’ve been wondering about that treasured family heirloom and would like to know what it might be worth, drive on over to Southport to get Plunkett’s expert opinion! The museum will be open that day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no charge but donations will be gratefully accepted. Plunkett does not appraise coins, stamps, money or gem stones.
The museum is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Labor Day. It houses artifacts that offer a broad picture of times past on the island, including the history of its fishing industry. The museum is at 419 Hendricks Hill Road.
