Sherman Brewer of Southport achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on October 30, 2013 and was honored on January 18 at the Southport Town Hall.
He is the first Eagle Scout in Southport Island’s Troop 238, and is the son of Scoutmaster Sarah Sherman and Maynard Brewer. Sherm earned 49 merit badges during his Scouting career, four of them being the historic and limited-edition 2010, 100th Anniversary of Scouting merit badges: carpentry, pathfinding, signaling and tracking.
Sherm’s Eagle Scout project was overseeing and participating in the construction of a new lion enclosure at D.E.W. Animal Kingdom in Mt. Vernon, Maine for owners Bob and Julie Miner. In total, Sherm and his volunteers put in 419 hours to complete the project.
Sherm is a sophomore at Boothbay Region High School and is a member of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) program, and recently hosted a German exchange student Eva Preiss from Bad Harzburg. He leaves for St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands to participate in Ocean Classroom’s Semester-at-Sea Program at the end of the month.
During the summer months, Sherm works hauling lobster traps out of his skiff and he is a volunteer at the Southport Yacht Club, teaching younger children how to sail. He also participates in the SYC’s 420 racing program and is a member of the Boothbay Region Sailing Club.
