Select board discusses wayfinding, updates on JEDC, east side
Boothbay Harbor Town Manager Tom Woodin on Monday announced a change in the date of onsite hearings concerning wharves and weirs. The first, Woodin said, is a basic rearrangement of floats at the Fish Pier, and the second concerns the property of Peter and Beverly Edwards. The onsite hearings will take place on Monday, Feb. 26 at a yet-to-be-determined time.
Tomko brought the board up to date on his involvement with the east side advisory workgroup and the joint economic development committee.
“We’ve met all the goals we originally laid out,” Tomko said, naming land uses and independent research outside the meeting. “(There was) great response from the community, a good dialogue. Basically, we’re moving forward … we’re continuing with the process.”
Tomko noted the JEDC is working on refining an action plan matrix concerning the latest work and research toward a regional economic master plan. The plan’s release is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, through a final presentation by the committee and its consultants from Camoin Associates. The meeting at the Boothbay fire station is open to the public.
Board vice chair Denise Griffin asked if wayfinding would be discussed soon. Woodin said it was supposed to be on the agenda that night, but with Chair Wendy Wolf absent, the topic will likely appear on the next meeting’s agenda.
Tomko said that after the present, second iteration of wayfinding studies, “within a matter of a month or so, we should have something concrete to be able to present and also have dollars to be put to (the budget committee).”
Griffin commended the work on wayfinding and signage.
“We’ve been struggling with this for so long, it would be nice to get this going even if we can’t get all the towns to agree. We need better signage throughout the whole region,” said Griffin.
Board member Russ Hoffman mentioned that many of those working with the ambulance are eager to sit before the budget committee.
“While there is an increase in the budget since last year,” explained Hoffman, “we’re working on a strategy to enhance retention with people who have taken a significant amount of training and certifications. It’s kind of a long term strategy that goes along with that.”
Griffin asked that any Boothbay Harbor resident interested in volunteering some time and working on the Refuse District committee should submit their names at the town office.
Financial officer Julia Latter shared the town’s financial information. The total revenue and expenses, year to date, are $5,888,557 and $5,019,953 respectively. The total accounts payable are $42,036.69 and the bank balance is $2,278,633.74. Latter said the town is 47 percent through the winter operations budget which is “very close to last year.”
