Seahawks win double overtime thriller and defeat Telstar

The Boothbay Region High School Seahawks are headed into the holiday break at 4-1 after a pair of wins over Spruce Mountain and Telstar. The victory over Spruce Mountain was one for the ages as it took two overtimes before the Seahawks could come away with a 92-87 decision at Porter Memorial on Thursday, Dec. 19.
It took a three-pointer at the end of regulation by the Seahawks' Julian Aponte and another three-pointer from Tyler Kachnovich of the visiting Phoenix at the end of the first overtime. Twenty lead changes and eight ties later, the Seahawks' bench made the difference as a host of players came in to make huge contributions with three starters eventually fouling out.
Junior Aaron Dickinson went 8 for 10 from the free throw line in the overtimes and Abel Bryer, who swings down to the junior varsity, finally sealed the game with two free throws in a total team effort.
The outcome looked bleak for the Seahawks late in regulation as the Phoenix held a three-point lead in the last minute but could not put the game away at the free throw line. With 28 seconds remaining, Andrew Hallinan hit one of two from the line for the Seahawks before the Phoenix got one from the line from John McKenna, who had missed his three previous attempts. With one last chance, the Seahawks were able to get a clean look for Aponte who drained the three-pointer with five seconds left to tie the score at 71.
John Hepburn, who led the Seahawks with 32 points, scored the first hoop of the overtime just before being disqualified with his fifth personal foul. The Phoenix took a brief lead on a three-pointer before Boothbay appeared to take control with a 6-0 run that started with a jumper by Aponte, a spin move by Bradley Drummond, and two free throws by Dickinson. But two three-pointers in the final 28 seconds, one by Scottie Hall and the huge one by Kachnovich with seven seconds left, sent the game into the second overtime.
Drummond started the scoring in the second overtime with a free throw, and in a game with several big plays, a steal by Nick Kilgus and pass to a streaking Aponte for a layup may have been the deciding factor. The Phoenix would get as close as two points one more time but four in a row at the line by Dickinson provided the winning margin.
Joining Hepburn in double figures was Aponte with 15 points and Evan Hepburn with 12.
On Saturday, December 21, the Seahawks traveled to Bethel where they had a much easier time handing the Telstar Rebels a 64-29 defeat. Boothbay led led 27-14 at the break and held their host to single digits in each period. John Hepburn led the scoring with 20 points.
