If you’ve never attended an outdoor track meet and wonder why the sport attracts so many Boothbay Region High School athletes, take the short drive to Wiscasset on a Tuesday afternoon and you will have your answer.

On the Wiscasset High School track last Tuesday, April 28, student athletes meandered from event to event, participating in some and cheering on their peers in others. It is so pleasant to be outside after the long winter and doubly so to see so many kids outdoors participating in sports. With many events happening at once in different parts of the track and field, the only decision is where to focus one’s attention or camera.

BRHS’s outdoor track team has five coaches this season and 47 student athletes, quite a feat for a school with 206 students. Nick Scott is head coach, focusing on distance events, including race walking, Bryan Dionne, assistant coach, sprints and long and triple jumps, Josh Higgins, assistant coach, throwing events and high jump, Dick Morrison, volunteer coach, and Mark Carter, volunteer coach, the floater, who helps out where needed.

At Tuesday’s meet, Boothbay faced Mountain Valley Conference competitors, Winthrop, Carrabec, St. Dom’s, Madison and Wiscasset. At the end of the day, BRHS boys had easily won the meet with 195.5 points (second place Madison was almost 40 points behind) and the Lady Seahawks placed second, just 2.5 points behind Monmouth Academy. BRHS boys bested their competitors with 195.5 points, followed by Madison, 157.5, Winthrop, 106, Monmouth Academy, 83, Carrabec, 33, Wiscasset, 26 and St. Dom’s,14. For the girls, Monmouth Academy won the meet with 172.5 points, followed by BRHS,170, Winthrop, 95, Carrabec, 62, St. Dom’s, 50, Madison, 31, and Wiscasset, 27.50. 

Athletes competed in 36 events on Tuesday and BRHS had at least one athlete competing in all but two of those. That matters a lot in track, since team scores are cumulative. And BRHS didn’t merely compete: they won 14 events and scored in 33.

Leading the BRHS scorers was Morgan Crocker with 40 points, who won the 300 and 100m hurdle events and the long and triple jumps. It’s Crocker’s senior year and she’s clearly ready to make it her best yet.

Sophomore Angie Perkins was second highest scorer overall, adding 32 points for the girls, 200m dash (2nd), 300m hurdles (2nd), high jump (first), 4x100m relay (3rd). Joey Paolillo scored 30 points, 800m run (1st), 4x800m relay (1st), 4x400m relay (1st); Kyle Ames, 28 points, 800m run (2nd), 4x800m relay (1st), 4x400m relay (1st); freshman Eli Gudroe, 27 points, high jump (1st), triple jump (3rd), long jump, (4th), 300m hurdles (3rd); Hannah Morley, 26 points, 1600m run (1st), 800m run (2nd), 4x400m relay (2nd); Sinead Miller, 25 points, 4x400m relay (2nd), 100m hurdles (4th), 300m hurdles (3rd); Abel Bryer, 23 points, javelin (1st), discus (2nd), 400m dash (4th); and Kyler Carty, 21 points, 4x800m relay (1st), 4x400m relay (1st), 800m run (7th).

Coach Scott said he was very pleased with the event. “I was really impressed with our team performances at Wiscasset. In just our second meet of the season we've had numerous athletes qualify for both the conference and state championships. As a result both teams have achieved quite a bit of success. Moving forward our goal is to qualify as many athletes as possible for the championship meets with the hope of performing well as a team.”

The Seahawks will be back at Wiscasset next Tuesday, May 5th, to face Wiscasset, Hall-Dale, Monmouth and Richmond. The meet starts at 3:45 p.m.
