Seahawks ski well at Sassi

The Boothbay Region High School Nordic team competed with 37 other Maine high schools in the annual Sassi Memorial Classic 5K race at Black Mountain on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The Seahawks boys team finished in the middle of the pack (20th overall) in a race dominated by the state’s top ski teams and skiers. Gould Academy finished first, followed by Yarmouth, Maranacook and Merriconeag.
Senior Robert Campbell led the Boothbay boys team finishing 72nd in a field of 228 at 16:19. Also scoring for BRHS were Kyler Carty, 121st at 17:54, Benn Scully, 123rd at 18:02 and Zach Vise, 163rd at 20:00.
In the girls race, Angela Machon was the sole finisher, placing 80th out of 185 competitors at 28:38. Veteran Sophia Thayer broke a binding during the race and was unable to finish.
Coach Emily Higgins said the entire team did well in their first race in weeks.
“It was a really good day with good waxing,” Higgins said. “Our team gets kudos from other coaches for the effort each member puts into his or her race.”
Higgins said it is particularly exciting to see some of the new team members excel.
“Trystan (Mercier) set a two minute personal record on Saturday,” Higgins said, “and Philip Owen has made great gains in the past few weeks from the the strength and technique training during practice.”
With only three weeks before the state championships, the Seahawks hope to make the most of the remaining races.
This Saturday, Feb. 1, they travel to Paris for the Oxford Hills Sprints, a freestyle competition.
Races begin at 10 a.m.
