Rev. Dr. William James Wood at Wilson Chapel
The Rev. Dr. William James Woodwill lead the service at the Wilson Memorial Chapel on Ocean Point this Sunday, Aug. 16. The service is at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome.
Having been raised in northern New Jersey, Wood has been a longtime summer resident of Bayville. Upon graduation from high school, he attended and received his bachelor’s degree in international relations from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He received his professional graduate degree from Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was ordained in 1967. Woodwill, accompanied by his wife, the former Susan Pettingill, then served in a variety of church settings in Liberia, West Africa; Detroit and St. Clair Shore, Michigan; Wichita, Kansas; and Northeast Harbor before retiring to the Boothbay area in 2008.
In addition to congregational ministry, he served as an overseas appointment of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Chaplain at Wayne State University in Detroit, and interim minister in Northeast Harbor. Throughout his ministry, Bill has worked to strengthen relationships of unity within diversity. In 2007 he received his doctor of ministry from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Reflecting upon 40 years of experiences in the ordained ministry, he wrote his doctorate thesis on radical hospitality.
A member of St. Columba’s in his retirement, Woodwill continues to sail in Linekin Bay, is the Commander of Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron, and has recovered a lifetime interest in railroads. Working on a lifetime desire to sail around the world, Bill and Sue are sailing around the world in segments. In the spring they returned from a 50-day cruise around Cape Horn from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles.
Bill and Sue are the parents of two sons and the insufferable grandparents of two grandsons and twin granddaughters. On Aug. 29, Bill will celebrate his 73rd birthday!
