American Red Cross Disaster Action Team members have been called to the scene of a single-family house fire in Cushing located at Cushing Road. The affected family has been placed at a hotel and Red Cross volunteers are currently on route to assess further assistance needed.

This is the second fire that coastal Maine Disaster Action Team members have responded to in three days. On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the Red Cross responded to a fire located on Marston Road in Boothbay. That fire started at 8:30 a.m. 

The Red Cross is providing emergency shelter, food, clothing and medication replacement for two adults and children from the Marston family. In addition to emergency relief, the Disaster Responders also provided the family with comfort kits and stuffed animals.

Larry French and Kira Gavin, disaster action team members from the Red Cross, continue to work with the family. “Seeing how much this family appreciated the services of the Red Cross makes me proud to do this work,” Gavin said. “Knowing that we made a difference at such a critical time is incredibly rewarding.”

French is the Red Cross Disaster Program Manager for coastal Maine. He has served in numerous capacities within the organization, starting as a volunteer disaster responder more than 12 years ago. Gavin specializes in health services. She is a new member of the Red Cross team having served 6 months. 

While the damage to the home is assessed, the American Red Cross will make sure that this family has a safe place to stay and the emotional support needed during this crisis.
