Pratts Island Bridge awaits railings
The new Pratts Island bridge is awaiting its railings. Work on the bridge began last summer and is complete but for the railings. Engineer Skip Rideout and his crew constructed the bridge and laid the granite abutments and approaches, but the design of the railings is in the hands of Paul Coulombe.
The bridge had been need of some repair for several years and the town of Southport was originally going to cover the cost of around $200,000, but Coulombe stepped up. He offered to foot the bill, providing it was entirely constructed of wood.
There are temporary railings in place for safety reasons. The new railings are being designed by Knickerbocker Group in Boothbay and people are wondering what they’re going to look like.
Knickerbocker Group’s Steve Malcolm said the architectural firm is currently in the process of designing the railings. Work will begin in March and they hope to have them in place by May 1.
