Power lines snap on Oak Street
High winds and rain brought down a tree branch over power lines, causing a burst of flames and power outages on Oak Street in Boothbay Harbor on June 11.
Leslie Cook of Boothbay Harbor was shopping at Oak Street Provisions when she saw smoke coming from the power lines at approximately 11:30 a.m. According to store owner Doug Roberts, Cook left to report the incident to the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department.
“Within five minutes, all hell broke loose,” Roberts said.
The power lines snapped, sending sparks 60 feet down the street. Greg Singer, who owns Mainely Scooters below Oak Street Provisions, said the power flickered three times, followed by two loud bangs.
Singer said he watched as the downed wires burst into ball of fire on the street, which he captured on video.
Oak Street was closed as Central Maine Power works on the wires. Traffic resumed at 2 p.m. on June 11.
