Police receive highway safety grant
The Boothbay Harbor Police Department has been awarded a $10,000 Maine Bureau of Highway Safety Grant to combat drunken driving.
Chief Bob Hasch said the grant will be used over the next year to increase patrol coverage specifically aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road.
“The goal of the grant is to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities associated with drinking and driving,” Hasch said, “We will have an extra officer on patrol on random dates throughout the year, and also will direct more effort during high profile times, such as holidays and in the summer.”
Hasch said that the department does not plan to use the grant to set up any checkpoints but has identified problem areas and time periods where surveillance will be increased.
“Our first priority is still prevention,” Hasch said, “We will continue to be proactive and to have officers on foot patrol downtown at key times to keep inebriated persons from driving.”
