The Lincoln County Grand Jury has indicted a Phippsburg man after he alleged illegally used a Wiscasset company's credit card.

David Chaney, 36, of Phippsburg was charged with felony theft after he allegedly used a company credit card for personal use.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Detective Scott Hayden wrote in the arrest report that Itchy & Scratchy Insulation Inc. reported a theft to Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline in June 2014. An employee told Hayden that Chaney was issued a company credit card in 2012 while he was still with the company, and was supposed to turn it in after he and the company parted ways.

When Chaney was given the card, there were written guidelines on how it was supposed to be used, Hayden wrote. The owner of the company allegedly told Chaney that it was to be used only for company expenses such as fuel.

Chaney quit his job May 29, 2014 and at that point was supposed to turn in the card. The card was canceled June 2, but at that time there were reportedly a number of unauthorized purchases on it.

Chaney reportedly said he had given the card to a co-worker.

According to Hayden's report, the accounting for the card was reportedly “lax” as receipts for purchases weren't turned in.

When the supposed fraudulent charges, which occurred after work hours or over the weekend were added up, Hayden reported finding more than $1,600 that had been charged to the credit card.

An arrest warrant was written for Chaney, who was charged with Class C theft by unauthorized taking.

If convicted, Chaney could face up to five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines.

Chaney has a court date set for June 22.
