Out with the old, in with the cold
Meet the new year; it's starting the same way the last one ended.
From Wiscasset in the south to Rockland up north, 2014 is scheduled to come in with a bang. Starting Thursday, Jan. 5 a snow storm is expected to arrive and leave anywhere from trace amounts of snow up to a foot.
Meteorologist Michael Cempa with the National Weather Service in Grey said the models aren't agreeing on much, but that in all likelihood, Maine is in for some more snow.
“Every day we get closer (the weather models) start to agree more and more,” he said. “We're looking at the potential for another storm and at this point we're far enough away that it's hard to tell how much we'll get.”
Cempa said there could be just a dusting or the storm could leave behind another foot as it churns northward. The snow is expected to start falling Thursday during the day and continue on until Friday.
One thing that will be falling for certain is the temperature, Cempa said.
“Starting tonight (Monday, Dec. 30) we will get some cold air in,” he said. “It will be down close to zero, and very similar (Tuesday) and Wednesday.
“It's going to stay in the teens and it might get up to 20.”
Cempa said the temperature could rise in time for the storm, but not by much.
The storm is actually two parts: one storm will come in from the northern plains while another originated in the Gulf of Mexico. As with most Maine storms, the snow is expected to be backed by wind.
This storm comes after a Sunday, December 29 storm that wracked the Midcoast with a mix of freezing rain, snow and sleet.
