Opening the doors at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center
The Boothbay Sea and Science Center will open its doors for the 2015 summer season on Monday, June 29.
Waiting to welcome the participants enrolled in the Mizzen & Budding Scientists Program (ages 5-9) and the Stay’s’l/Top’s’l & Emerging Oceanographer Program (ages 10-17) will be sea and science instructor Josiah Henderson and apprentice instructor Anna Sirois.
Henderson grew up in Brunswick. He is a 2014 graduate of Brunswick High School. Henderson recently finished his freshman year at St. Lawrence University. Returning as a sophomore this fall, Henderson intends to major in environmental science and economics. Henderson is a frequent visitor to Boothbay Harbor where his grandfather resides. Henderson credits his grandfather for his knowledge of the ways of the sea and his exceptional boating skills.
“I’m excited to bring some of my knowledge about the environment to BSSC and I look forward to integrating sailing and seamanship with scientific experiments,” Henderson said.
This is Sirois’ second summer at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center. During summer 2014, Sirois interned for BSSC’s then Science Director Carla Scocchi. Sirois was born in Damariscotta and resides with her parents and brother in Edgecomb. This fall, Sirois will be a junior at Lincoln Academy. Sirois is passionate about the Spanish culture. This past April, along with a group of 30 students from Lincoln Academy, she studied abroad for two weeks immersing herself in the Spanish language in Salamanca, Spain.
As a child, during her spare time, Sirois enjoyed drawing, swimming and good music. Her interest in sailing didn’t take hold until a few years ago when she began sailing with her father. Today, Sirois is not only excited about continuing to expand her passion for drawing but also is looking forward to sailing with the BSSC students. Sirois is the author and illustrator of the soon to be released Boothbay Sea and Science Center Coloring Book. She expects that the coloring book will be a big hit this summer with local and visiting children and hopes that it will be one of the many ways that Boothbay Sea and Science Center helps connect Maine and summering youth with the sea and marine science.
“I’m looking forward to working with all the BSSC participants and sharing my passion for art and the sea,” Sirois said.
