Boothbay Register reporter Ryan Leighton was awarded two first place plaques for his video work for the newspaper's website, reporter Sue Mello took second place for health reporting and the newspaper won two other awards at the 2014 New England Press and Newspaper Association's annual Better Newspaper Competition held in Boston on February 8. The Register also took first place for its mobile app and third place for multimedia coverage.

Leighton won for his news video, “Winter Storm Nemo Time Lapse,” which was done in February 2013, and for his feature video of the 2013 Fishermen's Festival.

Mello got her award with her reporting on the closing of St. Andrews Hospital. The newspaper awards were for its mobile website and the extensive coverage of the 2013 Fishermen's Festival, both online and in print.
