Maranacook Bears top Seahawks in Unified play
The Boothbay Region High School (BRHS) Seahawks lost to the Maranacook Community High School (MCHS) Bears Wednesday Feb. 26, on the road, 81-72. The Unified team’s record slips to 0-3 for the season as they eye two home games next week; Mar. 4 against Lisbon and Mar. 6 against Lincoln Academy.
Eddie Carpenter (Seahawks) and Jackson Foth (Bears) tipped off the competition. Carpenter played an incredible game, scoring 16 baskets for 32 points, including several fast break layups and countless assists. Thus far this season, Carpenter has opted to set up his teammates, enabling them to make baskets, but with the team down one player due to illness, and few resources on the bench for rotations, Carpenter played his best game of the year. He was quick on the court, fast to rebound and precise with shots.
Also topping his best record, Matthew Jackson drained 12 baskets for 24 points in relatively short order, a period the announcer referred to as the “The Matthew Jackson Show”. Teammates Chloe Joneth scored eight points, and Anthony Angelico scored six. Casey Phelps, Ronan Drage and Cole Hyson offered assists, rebounds and on-court encouragement.
The game’s only 3-pointer was a beautiful nothing-but-net shot taken by sophomore Bear Isa Alvarado who also scored many 2-point shots for her team.
This was the first match between the Seahawks and the Bears in Unified play. The Bears have an impressive roster of 16 players, only two of whom are seniors, and look to be competitive for years to come. They are coached by Jill Plourd, Amanda Knowlton, Tammy Allard and Elke Brown. The game was officiated by Brian Richardson.
Unified basketball is a community-level extension of Special Olympics Maine Unified Championship Club which promotes social inclusion, leadership, and friendship for both student athletes with and without disabilities.
