Many attend Marston family fundraiser

The food was ready promptly at 1:30 p.m. but the sharing of love for a classmate and friend began way before buffet line was set up.
The Boothbay Region High School class of 1971 and friends “did it up right” on Sunday, March 2 as its fundraiser for the Geoff Marston family, who lost their home to a fire on February 5, proved very popular. Close to 200 people showed up during the two and a half hour event to enjoy a great assortment of food items, an even greater collection of donated raffle items, music by local musicians Tim Sprague, Dick Spofford and Garry Blackman Sr., and meeting up with like-minded people who were there to help a friend, a neighbor, a classmate and “a great guy.”
Less than a week after the fire, classmates began connecting through Facebook and phone calls to organize a fundraiser for Geoff and Lorri Marston and their two young sons. While some organized the buffet dinner, others went out and collected dozens of raffle items, or baked pies for the pie sale. Businesses and individuals donated raffle items freely and the wonderful cooks in the region supplied enough food for probably three fundraising dinners. Also, a fund for the family was set up through www.gofundme.com on the same day as the fire and, as of Tuesday, over $12,500 in pledges has been raised.
Tom Nickerson, a 1971 classmate who was one of the event organizers, thanked everyone for helping Geoff Marston and his family by attending Sunday's event.
“I'm 60 and I have seen a lot of fires during my lifetime (Nickerson is a former chief of the Boothbay Fire Department). If you lose your house and belongings at age 30, it's terrible but you have time to recover. But to lose almost everything you own at age 60, like Geoff did, it's extremely hard to recover,” Nickerson said.
