The Maine Sea Coast Mission at Wilson Chapel
The Rev. Scott Planting, president of Maine Sea Coast Mission, will lead the service at the Wilson Chapel on Ocean Point on Sunday, July 19. The offering from that service will be donated to the Maine Sea Coast Mission. The service is at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome.
Planting graduated from Amherst College and Harvard University Divinity School. He and his wife, Marsha, have two daughters, Mercer and Hadley, and two grandchildren.
Previous to beginning his service at Maine Sea Coast Mission in October of 2010, Planting served as a parish minister of a 3-church parish in Western Maine (Farmington, New Portland, and North New Portland) for 35 years.
The parish was part of a cooperative parish called Mission at the Eastward (MATE). MATE comprises eight congregations and several social service ministries — youth, housing, camping and a partnership with a rural South African parish.
Planting served as Mission Coordinator for MATE for the past 23 years and especially enjoyed connecting the cultural history of the region with the ministry.
A non-denominational, nonprofit organization, the Maine Sea Coast Mission “provides spiritual, health, and youth development programs in coastal and island communities from mid-coast to Downeast Maine.” One of its far-reaching, high-impact programs is EDGE, an afterschool program serving nearly 500 children in Washington County. The Mission supports coastal and island communities in many ways including providing valuable medical services via the 75-foot long Sunbeam V.
Thanks to the Sunbeam V, when The Sea Coast Mission is needed, they are there.
