‘I'm not for sale’
The sign in the window of Bet's Famous Fish Fry reads: “Bigger fish to fry. See you in May.”
Bet Finocchiaro made it clear in a recent phone interview that she has not sold her fish shack or the building behind it in Boothbay Center, and has no intention to in the near, or far, future.
Rumors have been flying since she closed the fish shack for the winter and put up the sign.
But according to Finocchiaro, that's all they are — rumors. “I’m tired of having to wear sunglasses to Hannaford’s,” she said, “even when it's raining.”
She said she's being asked if it was true that she turned down large sums of money to “sell out.”
“You think I'd pass up $2 million for that shack?” Finocchiaro said. “And no, I'm not for sale! I could move that shack (and fish fry business) out to Back Narrows and people would find me.”
The truth is that she and her husband will be doing some renovation on the building behind the fish shack, and using part of it to make fish chowder next summer. “I sold chowder 20 years ago and I want to start selling it again.”
Finocchiaro said that her sign reading, “Bigger fish to fry” is just a play on words, for obvious reasons.
She's not moving. She’s not selling. And she may not have free beer tomorrow, but she will see you in May.
