Double overtime thriller

You almost had to be there to believe what took place at Porter Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday night, December 19. Not your typical high school basketball game, but maybe one of the all-time classics.
In two overtimes, the Boothbay Region High School Seahawks got the last two points of the night from a kid who played in the junior varsity game as the team held on for a historic 92-87 victory over the Spruce Mountain Phoenix (Jay-Livermore Falls).
There was a three-pointer at the end of regulation play by Seahawk Julian Aponte and another three-pointer from Tyler Kachnovich of the Phoenix at the end of the first overtime. Twenty lead changes and eight ties later, the Seahawks’ reserves made the difference as a host of players came off the bench to make huge contributions with four of the Boothbay starters eventually fouling out.
Junior Aaron Dickinson went 8 for 10 from the free throw line in the overtimes, Abel Bryer who swings down to the junior varsity, finally sealed the game with two free throws, and contributions from about everyone made the difference.
John Hepburn, who fouled out early in the first overtime, led the Seahawks with a career high 32 points. Aponte added 15 points. including a huge bucket in the first overtime besides the huge three-pointer, and Evan Hepburn finished with 12.
