Cougars nip Lady Seahawks

Senior guard Lindsy Crutchfield scored on a five-foot jumper off the glass with two seconds to play to give the visiting Dirigo Cougars a 36-34 win over the Lady Seahawks in Western Maine Class C action at Boothbay Region High School Wednesday night.
After BRHS junior guard Morgan Crocker hit the second of two free throws to tie the game at 34-34 with 30 seconds to play, Dirigo Coach Reggie Weston called a timeout to set up the final play.
“We wanted to get a clear out for (point guard) Emma Lueders,” said Weston. “We had Lindsy pop out to the wing. After Emma couldn’t find an opening to drive, she dished to Lindsy who put up the shot after a couple of dribbles to the basket.”
Boothbay led at halftime, 20-16.
“It certainly was a tough one but our defensive effort was tremendous,” said Lady Seahawk Coach Tanner Grover on Thursday. “We held their best player, Jessica Conant, to just 4 free throws. I think the story of the game can really be found in the shooting statistics - Dirigo was 13 of 26 from the field while we were 15 of 44 (3 of 17 from 3-point). I love our attempts - you have to take shots to make shots - and for the most part, I felt we got quality looks that just wouldn't go down.”
Lueders led Dirigo (2-0) with 13 points while junior forward Kelsey Hutchins added 12.
Boothbay (1-1) was led by junior Morgan Crocker with 23 points.
The Lady Seahawks junior varsity defeated Dirigo, 33-15.
