Boothbay Harbor election and town meeting May 3 and 4
On May 3, voters in Boothbay Harbor will head to the polls to vote. Five of the six open positions have unopposed candidates. The sixth, for a selectman's position, has only two people running for three seats. Whoever gets the most write-in votes will gain the third seat in that election.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 3. The remaining articles in the Town Warrant will be voted on May 4 at 9 a.m., during town meeting held in the Boothbay Region Elementary School Gymnasium. All voters in Boothbay Harbor are invited to attend, as only those voters attending will have a say.
Those running for selectmen are Denise C. Griffin and William R. Hamblen; for cemetery district trustee, Merlin H. Gray; for water district trustee, Harry L. Pinkham; for superintendent school committee, Sandra E. Paxson; for trustee of the Rocky Channel’s School System, Cameron Mitchell; and for sewer district trustee, Deryl P. Kipp.
Voters will also vote yes or no on three referendum questions, which are articles 3, 4, and 5 of the town warrant:
1. To see if the town will vote to authorize the municipal officers to appropriate up to $400,000 of the existing general fund towards replacement of the Public Works cold storage building?
2. Do you support maintaining the status of a Critical Access Hospital at St. Andrews Hospital?
3. Do you favor allowing municipal officers of the towns of the Boothbay Region Water District to be eligible for nomination and election as trustees of the Boothbay Region Water District?
The vast majority of remaining articles being voted on during town meeting on May 4 have to do with changes in the wording of town ordinances, which make them clearer but do not change their meaning.
The rest seek approval of budget appropriations for the upcoming fiscal year, which the selectmen and budget committee have agreed upon.
These include $2,795,690 for the municipal budget, $981,224 for street lights, hydrants, the Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District, and Bayville/Isle of Springs accounts, $125,574 for “Unclassified Organization” accounts, and $181,906 for the ambulance service account.
A full breakdown of the money distribution can be viewed at the town office and in the town report.
