Boothbay Harbor citizens: It’s time to make a difference
Do you have an interest in town government? Would you like to have a stronger voice in how Boothbay Harbor is run? If so, this is your chance — nomination papers are now available at the Boothbay Harbor Town Office for nine positions that need to be filled on various town committees.
Three spots are available for Boothbay Harbor Selectmen. Two of these are three-year terms, with the seats being held by Jay D. Warren and Vice Chairman Denise Griffin. The third seat, which is a one-year term, fills the vacancy formerly held by Robert Splaine, whose resignation was accepted December 23, 2013. As of February 14, only Jay Warren has submitted papers to run for selectman.
For those interested in working with the school system, there are several spots available. Boothbay Harbor is also seeking two trustees for the Rocky Channels school system, one under a one-year term and the other for a three-year term. The three-year position is currently held by Richard Hallinan, and the one-year term is for a currently vacant seat.
Also up for election is one member of the superintendent school committee for a three-year term, currently held by Larry Colcord; one trustee of the Boothbay Harbor sewer district, currently held by Henry A. Tedeschi Jr.; one trustee of the Boothbay Region Water District, currently held by Walter S. Reed III, and one trustee of the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Cemetery District, currently held by Arthur W. Richardson.
According to Town Clerk Michelle Farnham, as of noon on February 14, the only papers submitted for these positions have been for Walter S. Reed III to maintain his position at the water district, and Ralph Welch to join the cemetery district.
“They have until March 18 to submit papers, so there are probably more people planning on running,” Farnham said.
In order to run, citizens of Boothbay Harbor need to pick up nomination papers and get signatures from between 25 and 100 citizens supporting them to run. These then must be turned into the town clerk of Boothbay Harbor by 4:30 p.m. on March 18, 2014. Voting hours will be Friday, May 2, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Town Meeting will be held the next morning at 9 a.m. at the Boothbay Region Elementary School.
