Wiscasset children excel at writing camp
Tanya Albert and Lisa Truesdell, teachers at Seeds of Knowledge Education Center in Wiscasset, helped children discover the value, purpose, and enjoyment of writing during “Write On! Writing Camp.”
Each day children were exposed to different genres of writing. Children wrote descriptions, persuasive essays, poetry and comics. Sometimes the purpose was to persuade the reader of an opinion, other times it was to entertain the reader.
Qualities of good writing were emphasized throughout the week. Discussing the “Write Traits” and reading and analyzing writing samples of published authors helped teach these qualities. Games were also interjected throughout the camp to help reinforce writing concepts and to make children aware that writing inspiration can be found anywhere.
In the second half of each daily session, children focused on non-fiction writing pieces with the purpose of writing to inform. Roots, children in grades 4-6, wrote autobiographies and Life in 2013 essays to place in their time capsules. Sprouts, children in grades 2-3, learned about non-fiction text features and included them in their own animal books.
Children presented their writing to family and friends at an Author’s Tea on Friday. Celebrating all their hard work and creativity was a wonderful way to end the week.
Lisa Truesdell and Tanya Albert are offering “Secret Agent Academy Camp” from August 12-16.
