What a season!
The high school and elementary school basketball seasons are over but what a ride it was. A state championship game for the Lady Seahawks — first time in 32 years — and a second straight 17-1 regular season record (losing their only game on a controversial play at Monmouth). Congratulations.
The Seahawk boys made it to the semifinal round of the South C tournament, before falling to the Winthrop Ramblers. Along the way to the tournament, Coach I.J. Pinkham reached the 600-win plateau and has more wins than any other Maine high school boys basketball coach in history. Think about it. Congratulations to the boys team and Coach Pinkham.
The eighth grade boys basketball team, coached by Jason Lorrain, won the large school Busline League title and the seventh grade girls, coached by John Deetjen, were Busline League large school runners-up. Congratulations to both teams.
Basketball in Maine is tops when it comes to spectator sports and the Boothbay region has been fortunate for many years to have witnessed winning and competitive teams. We win in other sports, too, such as cross-country and tennis in most recent years, and football and track in the not so distant past.
We commend the dedication put in by these athletes and coaches. Although we missed out on another championship, success isn't always measured by trophies. Success is also measured by teamwork, individual improvement and sportsmanship, which is something our coaches and players work hard at.
So as the wind blows away the last vestiges of a mild winter and we head into spring, think back and be glad we had such a memorable season in basketball (and weather).
