This week at The Harbor Theatre: ‘Maleficent’
The “Maleficent” character is an extremely powerful, evil fairy, and the main antagonist in Disney's 1959 animated feature, “Sleeping Beauty.” She returns in this 2014 live-action film with Angelina Jolie in the title role, with the rest of the story.
Maleficent is cruelly betrayed by the love of her teen life, Stefan, who sought to have the King's crown. When King Stefan and his queen have a daughter, Maleficent takes offense at not being invited to the christening of Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning). She attempts revenge on King Stefan and his queen by gifting the infant with a curse: On her 16th birthday, she is destined to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into an eternal sleep. Only “true love's kiss” can awaken her.
“Sleeping Beauty” was based on “La Belle au bois dormant” ("The Beauty Sleeping in the Wood") by Charles Perrault (published in 1697), and “Briar Rose” by The Brothers Grimm. “Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain, and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turned her pure heart to stone.
Salon.com describes “Maleficent” as a “... Disney adventure that offers a relaunched and throughly delightful Angelina Jolie.”
Reviewer Leonard Maltin says, “in “Maleficent” a lush fairy-tale world is created and the results are truly magical.”
“Maleficent” is rated PG, and also stars Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
Held over for another week! The film plays now through Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 8.
