Volunteers make BikeMaine a huge success
On behalf of the 2014 BikeMaine Peddling the Waterways Trek and the Town of Boothbay Harbor, I would like to thank the community volunteers who contributed time and effort to make the cyclists visit to Boothbay Harbor a huge success.
Thank you to Superintendent Eileen King, Facilities and Maintenance Director David Benner, the CSD School Board and Board of Trustees for allowing this event to take place. Without the use of the school athletic field this event would not have happened.
Thank you Jonne Trees for your excellent TV coverage of the event including aerial footage taken with the use of the drone.
Thank you to Darlene French and her staff for coordinating meals including breakfast and a lobster bake prepared by Tom Caron and served by the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department for over 300 people. Bob and Sally Maroon saved the day by assisting with water and electricity for the lobster bake. Send me the bill Bob. Win Mitchell and Craig Andrews quenched thirsts at the beer tent and Bill Mook provided free oysters at the cookout. Wow! Michelle Davis, representing the Chamber of Commerce, stepped up and did an amazing job of staffing the information tent, providing brochures and guides and answering multitudes of questions from new visitors to our community. Boothbay Harbor Public Works Department did an excellent job providing power, sewer and water facilities as well as hoisting banners, coordinating the parking lot set ups and transporting food and supplies between the elementary school and the cookout location.
The Boothbay Harbor Police Department provided traffic control and Jim Powers cheerfully welcomed our guests as they arrived at the tent village. Steve Ham provided non-stop shuttle service to town and back to the tent village accommodating special requests when they arose. Thank you to Kris Folsom of the Botanical Gardens and Andy Hamblett from the YMCA for providing shuttle service to the gardens and for opening up the YMCA showers for the riders.
Sarah Pendleton Sutter staffed the medical tent, Rick Glide and Julia Fallon Peters provided therapeutic massages for the riders that were aching after their 60-mile bike ride.
Stephanie Hawke and Project Graduation, along with the Boosters Club, did an amazing job with the snack shack. Students helped cook breakfast sandwiches and the $8 lobster rolls were HUGE successes.
The surprise boat trip on the Novelty and the elegant dinner at the Spruce Point Inn is something that our visitors will talk about for years to come. Thank you Captain Bill Campbell and Carolyn Laroche for making those happen.
The Boothbay Region Seahawk football team and Coach Dionne were a tremendous help setting up tents, carrying bags and being wonderful representatives of our community. I received lots of compliments regarding our students that assisted cyclists and that staffed the charging station. Many of our guests are already talking about returning to Boothbay Harbor.
The Holy Mackerels and The Boneheads capped off Bike Maine’s visit with a free concert. Thank you to Cathy Sherrill and the bands for a great show.
I’m sure I have missed some names and for that I apologize. You all did a great job! You should all be very proud of how you rallied. You all made our community proud. This could not have been done without you. You are all what makes this community a great place to live. Thank you.
