Trophies awarded August 23
What are the odds of winning the Fantastic Friday Free Dinner drawing once not to mention twice? Mel Rines name was drawn two weeks ago and he wasn’t present so his name went back in the bowl and darned if it didn’t get drawn again last Friday night and … no Mel! This week the drawing is worth $450 in dining room credits so be there between 5 and 6:30 p.m. for happy hour drink prices and the fabulous drawing.
Speaking of winning, Bob Scribner reports from the sail racing front: “The third and final race in the Commodore Cup series was held off Spruce Point Saturday afternoon. What started out as a mild breeze from the northwest quickly clocked to the southwest with a nice 14-knot breeze making an enjoyable day on the water. There were three racing divisions, and all three sailed an identical 7.4 nautical mile course which included a long leg into Linnekin Bay. Principal Race Officer, John Chapman ordered the ideal weather for this race.
The results are: In Division one, All That Jazz captained by Cathy Latta took first place followed by Bob Vauter in Salute. Division two saw Vice Commodore Lee Krow’s Momentum ahead of Bill Hunt in Firebolt. The Boothbay Harbor One Design fleet saw youth prevail with Marion’s Way sailed by the Van der veen family finishing first ahead of Tom Tavenner, finishing second, in Galatea and Debbie Swan finishing third in Fraulein.

We saw a sleek MJM 40’ motor yacht at the dock last Saturday and sure enough it was Bob and Mary Johnstone stopping by to say hello and have dinner with old friends on the way home from Northeast Harbor to Newport. Bob tells me that he is in the midst of plans to produce a 50-foot version of his beautiful craft!
Sarah Seepe reports that “the Wednesday Mah Jongg Group is active! Today we had eighteen ladies playing mahjong at the club. (In total I have introduced 30 members to the game ... 18 last year and 12 this year.) The number playing each week varies depending on members summer commitments ... house guests, etc. but we do have a dedicated group which meets for lunch and then plays mahjong from 1 to 3:30 each Wednesday afternoon. Mahjong is not just for ladies. It was originally a man's game and next year we hope to have more men join us. It is great fun to play and a pleasure and privilege to teach such a wonderful group.”
A fantastic band, “wahinies” presenting leis to arrivals and a spectacular 30-minute fireworks display were just some of the highlights of the Dinner Dance presented by Paul Coulombe and Mary Linda Rapelye. Decorations were fabulous and the food was delicious according to all reports. Certainly the was a throwback to years ago in both design and execution.
Saturday morning is the annual meeting held at 0900 in the dining room.
Upcoming events include the first antique car event on August 25 and the Tuesday night prime rib night featuring the piano and vocal talents of Danny Beal. Also the volunteer hostesses who man the front desk daily will be honored and thanked at a tea on August 27.
