Three cheers for 'Blood, Sweat and Tears'

On February 9, the Boothbay Region YMCA will be holding a “Blood, Sweat and Tears Fitness Challenge” for all ages. Registration is required and will be open to February 1. The event consists of 10 different challenges and takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:40 p.m.
Mary Baudo, the Y’s Wellness Director, and Melissa Hake, the Wellness Coordinator, came up with the idea of the challenge.
“We wanted something that would take place in the winter that people could train for. Something that could tie in with New Year’s Resolutions,” Baudo said.
Working together with their volunteer team, Baudo and Hake decided on 10 different events that would create a program where there was something for everyone, Hake said.
The events are: Jammin’ jump rope, hi/lo numbers, a speed and agility drill, basketball knockout, burpee builders, freestyle swim challenge, suicides, legs of steel, a tire flip and yoga. Detailed descriptions of each event can be found on the registration form.
“It’s like the strongman competitions, just not so intense,” Baudo said.
Staff and volunteers will be referring each event and helping each other during the day. Male and female contestants will be competing separately, though children and adults will be competing side-by-side.
“A kid could easily win some of these events,” Hake said. “Like jump rope. I could see a kid beating out the adults. The speed and agility drill, they could also win that,” Baudo said.
There are a few events, of course, that children probably won’t participate in, such as Legs of Steel, where a heavy weight must be carried while doing lunges and squats. Male contestants will be carrying a 50-lb. weight and females a 25-lb. one.
A minimum of 10 people (of each gender) need to sign up for an event to take place. The cost to participate is $10 per event, or $55 for six or more events. Each participant will get a T-shirt and is free to watch any event they are not participating in.
Admission for spectators is $5 for members and non-members. Spectators will receive a bracelet granting access to all the events, and also entitles spectators to the use of the Y’s facilities for the day.
The cost of the event goes to sponsor the wellness department of the Y.
