Thirty boats compete in Boothbay Harbor Regatta

    On Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31, the 42nd annual running of one of Maine’s premier Regattas, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta, was sailed under clear but sometimes wind deficient conditions. Saturday proved better sailing than Sunday but 30 boats from all over the state competed for divisional titles and bragging rights. The GMORA summer series races were sponsored by Spruce Point Inn and Robinson’s Wharf with additional sponsorship by Paul’s Steak House, J Edward Knight Company, White Mountain Fiberglass, Charleston Harbor Boat Tours, MJM Yachts, Smithwick and Marriner and Paul Luke Shipyard.

    Winner in the Division 1 Race were: First place: Ken Colburn of Green Island and his crew sailing a 42’ Swan Apparition. Second was Ryan Raber in Scapa, third, Doyle Marchant in Revolution IV. Reginald Smithwick sailing Kaos II, Bob Kellogg in Tamarack, and Richard Hallett in Family Wagon also finished.

    In Division 2, Thomas Hall sailing Wet Paint took the gun followed by Butch Minson in Cats Paw second and Sam Maloney in Five Speed third. Also finishing was Wolfgang Beauchinger in Intangible and Ben Donahue in Arraign Jane.

    In Division 3, a young, upstart crew of 15 year olds and younger, sailing Quite, a J-22, took the honors. Skippered by Gabby Boord and crewed by Ella Beauregard, Henry Currier and Hamilton Barclay, the young crew outraced boats sailed by folks many years their senior. Second place was taken by Kate Bowditch sailing a Christmas Cove 21 Pozy and third was taken by Aidin Clark and crew sailing Pirouette. The young Quite crew also won the Midcoast Maine J-22 championship and each of the crew was awarded the Hank Spencer Trophy.

    In the Boothbay Harbor One Design Division, Tom Tavenner and his crew Deanna Clarkson won first place in Galatea, second went to Patty Berger in Wildfire and third to Jon Dunsford in Bittersweet.

    In the J-80 fleet, the victor was Bill Hunt sailing Firebolt, followed by Jeff Curtis sailing Silkie and then Cathy Latta sailing Blue Skies. Hunt also won the Mid Coast Maine J-80 championship.

    In the Cruising Class, Tim Allen of Harborfield’s in West Harbor took first in his Peterson 34’ Greyhawk, second place went to Michael Gaffney in Sunfish, and third to Justin Andrus in Ingalina. Also finishing were Vice Commodore Bob Scribner in Panache, Chris Malliet in Step Liveley II, and Richard Parent in Beausolel.
