Texan wins American Legion quilt raffle

On Veterans Day, Anne Burt of Houston won the Charles E. Sherman Jr. American Legion Post 36 Quilt Raffle. She received her prize on New Year’s Day presented by quilt maker Sara Fahnley. The raffle sold 220 tickets and raised $1,060 for VETS (Veterans Emergency Temporary Shelter) Inc. The local nonprofit has built four temporary shelters and all four are currently deployed around the state, including Acadia National Park in Southwest Harbor, and Waterville and Farmingdale. State officials took the fourth shelter on Jan. 1 for a veteran. “Not sure where they are taking it. All I was told was he needed it pretty bad for the next two weeks,” VETS Inc. President Ed Harmon said.
VETS Inc. is manufacturing four more temporary shelters. Harmon reported four mainframes are being built in Georgia and he expects to receive them at his Boothbay shop by Jan. 25. Harmon along with Arthur Richardson and John Hargreaves formed the non-profit group last January with a goal of manufacturing 15. VETS Inc. wanted to provide homeless Maine veterans with temporary shelters while they wait for state and federal approval for long term housing. Last year, Harmon estimated 13 Maine veterans were homeless on any given night.
Burt bought five raffle tickets. She purchased them to assist homeless veterans in need. “It is such a great cause and the quilt is beautiful, too,” she said.
Post Cmdr. Dave Patch said the next fundraiser is a firewood raffle. The post received two cords donated by Brian Barter. Patch reported tickets will sell for $5 each, with two winners each receiving a cord.
