Tapestry Singers auditions

Wed, 07/24/2019 - 11:00am

Tapestry Singers is gearing up to begin a new semester in preparation for their annual concert entitled “Woven In Song: A December Tapestry.”  The concert will include a collection of pieces by contemporary composers from the mid-twentieth century to present day.

There will be songs for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Winter Solstice. “Most of the composers on our concerts are still living, a conscious choice on our director’s part to keep our singers and listening public up to speed with current choral music,” says board member Jaja Martin.

The group holds rehearsals on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 at the ATEC Building on the Lincoln Academy campus in Newcastle. About the group, Director Beth Preston, said  “Tapestry Singers’ rehearsals are a joy! The singers work hard and the expectations are high, but we also have plenty of good fun as we make music together. I am grateful that the group allows me to choose repertoire that challenges them. Our audiences have come to expect something out of the ordinary, new choral music and familiar tunes that are interestingly arranged.”

The Tapestry Singers include members from high-school age through 80-something. Preston has had a hand in training singers for the past 24 years at Lincoln Academy, so the group especially welcomes those alumni.

The singers have a range of musical training, but have the expectation that everyone will practice on their own and then rehearse hard for two hours on Monday nights. Those who are not strong music readers commit the time needed to learn the music using the practice tracks that are provided.

Auditions will be open for new members through the end of August. For an audition, email info@tapestrysingersmaine.org.
